Welcome to the McCabe Family Key West Road Trip!

Welcome to our road trip blog for our trip to Key West, Florida.
This is the sixth road trip we've taken in the last seven years (2012-2018), and may be our last, though hope springs eternal, as my imagination for road trips knows no real bounds.

In 2012, Clare, Conor, and I did a short jaunt to the site of the Johnstown Flood, the Horseshoe Curve, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, and Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (alas, I kept no blog for that trip!). It was lots of fun, and I've been wanting to get back to the Hall of Fame ever since.

In 2013, after driving through Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico (Roswell, of UFO fame), Arizona (Painted Desert National Park), and Nevada (Hoover Dam), on and off of Route 66, Clare, Conor, and I met Suzanne in Las Vegas, stayed at the luxurious Bellagio, took in the sights, and then headed to Grand Canyon National Park.  From there we journeyed home through Sedona, Arizona, the Dust Bowl cities in Oklahoma and Kansas, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Indianapolis, Indiana (Gray Brothers Cafeteria), and finally the Flight 93 National Memorial.

In 2014, we all traveled together to the Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. On the way home, we stopped at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

In 2016, Clare, Conor, and I motored to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, then visited Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Bob Dylan's hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, picked up Suzanne in Billings, Montana, drove America's most scenic road, the Beartooth Highway, stayed two days in Yellowstone National Park, and logged more than 6,000 miles visiting other historic and touristy sites and national parks, including Devils Tower, Badlands National Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

Last year, in 2017, we all journeyed on an international road trip to Canada, visiting Montreal, Quebec City, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island (Confederation Bridge), Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the Hopewell Rocks in the Bay of Fundy, and Roosevelt-Campobello International Park, before returning home via Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine.

For this trip to Key West, we leave Friday, August 10, 2018, with a first stop at Monica & Bob's in Ellicott City, Maryland, to better get a head start for a long drive on Saturday, August 11, and we return home on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, for a total of 12 days of road tripping to Congaree National Park in South Carolina, Savannah and Jekyll Island in Georgia, St. Augustine, Palm Beach (site of the Breakers and the infamous Mar-a-Lago!), the Overseas Highway, the Florida Keys, Key West, and Everglades National Park (and more), in Florida, Charleston in South Carolina, and Fayetteville in North Carolina.

Key lime pie!

Hi everybody! Guest post by Clare here! I've been tasked by my father with tackling the subject of key lime pie, the official state dessert of Florida and one of my favorites too! After doing some extensive research on the best key lime pie in Key West, Old Town Bakery  was ranked #1 in the Miami New Times as the BEST place to get key lime pie in all of the Florida Keys! So, while leaving Key West, we stopped in at Old Town, a cute little bakery, and grabbed four slices of genuine key lime pie. Now for the background. Key lime pie is traditionally made with key limes, which are much smaller than traditional limes, and are yellow when ripe. (I have made key lime pie with both types of limes, and I honestly don't taste much of a difference. 🤷) The key lime pie from Old Town Bakery did not let us down! It was really delicious. Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing

Our second stop of the day was the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing located off Interstate 75 in Ocala, Florida. If there was ever a quintessential road trip attraction, this is it - a place full of cars! Don Garlits, known to his fans as "Big Daddy," is synonymous with drag racing and is the National Hot Rod Association's #1 drag racer of all time. I didn't know who he was when I got there, but I sure as heck had a better idea of who he was when I left. The museum was filled to the gills with drag racers of all shapes and sizes, and lots of other memorabilia and artifacts of the drag racing world. Next door to the drag racing museum was the Museum of Classic Cars which was loaded with old, classic and rare cars, most of them restored to their original, mint condition, including a 1956 Chrysler Imperial owned by President Eisenhower.
